Rachel Galley - A Profile
Rachel Galley graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 2004 with a First Class Honours Degree in Jewellery Design. She was one of 10 finalists in the 2008 UK Retail Jewellery awards for the Young Designer of the Year award, and received a Coutts London Jewellery Week- New Jeweller Award for 2009
Rachel has worked for prestigious brands in the luxury market such as Links of London, Stephen Webster and Boodles before starting her own business based in a studio within Cockpit Arts, an organisation which describes itself as a 'creative business incubator for 165 resident designer-makers’. Being situated in the heart of London's Jewellery quarter is an important inspiration for Rachel’s unique designs which are worn by singer Lily Allen and actress Juliette Lewis, as well as TV presenters, musicians and fashion models.
Rachel's Designs are stylish, interactive and fun to wear; some contain a mystery within, making them unique and individual to the wearer. Rachel's Collections celebrate a special time in one’s life and make an original gift or treasured keepsake.
Rachel grew up in Marple, Cheshire.
"I was always asking to borrow my mother's rings, I would offer to tidy her or my Grandma’s jewellery box, I was a bit of a magpie"
Her father is a civil engineer and her mother a teacher and recent archaeologist.
"My dad was always encouraging me to help him solder pipework and wire plug; girls can do this stuff and insisted I had a go"
"My mother encouraged me to take part in all things creative and practical"
In an early business venture Rachel made beaded earrings to sell at school for extra pocket money; the beginning of her current creative business. The Arts Foundation Course at Stockport College and the inspirational support from the tutors provided the focus and energy needed to achieve a place at Central Saint Martins.
Rachel draws her inspiration from intricate carved wood, bronze historic treasures, architecture, engineering, natural textures and objects found in our daily lives. Rachel adds her own innovative twist with hidden compartments or containers, enabling the wearer to interact with their jewellery. Bespoke, handmade fittings and clasps give each piece her own signature finish.
